Mixed-Use Development Will Create New Opportunities for Plantation

The City of Plantation has been experiencing noticeable growth with its current population of over 90,000 residents. Being a mid-sized suburban city, Plantation strives to create a balance of green spaces and urban amenities in its existing and future developments. According to the City’s Planning, Zoning & Economic Development division, the City is actively creating new lifestyle options that will have a positive impact on the way people live, work, and interact with each other. One of the most anticipated projects currently under construction is Plantation Walk, a 32-acre mixed-use development.

Plantation Walk is located in the heart of Plantation just north of Broward Boulevard on University Drive. Previously the site was occupied by the Fashion Mall, a staple in the community from 1988 to 2007. During its peak years, the Fashion Mall served as a gathering place for the community where they could shop, dine, and occasionally participate in special events. After sustaining damage from Hurricane Wilma, The Fashion Mall failed to conduct necessary repairs, and its occupational licenses were revoked.

Art Falcone, CEO of Encore Capital Management, saw an opportunity to revitalize the site and create new opportunities for the City of Plantation.

“Plantation Walk will fill a huge void that residents of the city have been dealing with for a long time,” said Falcone. “Many Plantation residents, and those who work in the city, have to go east in order to find better dining, shopping and entertainment options. We are about to change that.”

Once completed, Plantation Walk will be composed of 200,000 sq. ft. of retail space, 160,000 sq. ft. of Class A offices, 700 residences, and a 262-room full-service hotel. Living up to its name, Plantation Walk will be a pedestrian-friendly space with walking paths that connect its shops, restaurants, and public spaces. Residents and office workers will be able to look out of their windows and see a patchwork of lush green spaces and dynamic storefronts. A large plaza at the center of the site will be the epicenter of this space. It will serve as an entry point to the site, provide open, central space for gathering & lounging, and accomodate outdoor dining.

“It’s time to bring in a new era of an enhanced lifestyle to the city,” added Falcone.

Construction of Plantation Walk is still progressing during the recent Covid-19 pandemic. Workers are following strict safety protocols and are encouraged to stay home if they feel ill. Retail shops, dining venues and two apartment towers are scheduled for completion in late 2020. In early 2021, an additional residential tower is scheduled for completion. A future phase, including additional residential apartments and a hotel, is also in development.
